S Ranked Burden Tamer (7)

This chapter is kinda confusing in how its written with the narration perspective changing from character to character rather abruptly. Not like it’s unreadable or anything but thought it would be important to keep in mind.

Chapter 7 Unexpected Hardships【Party’s Perspective】

[Shit! Why are so many monsters coming out on the way back!?]

[Loig and I will take the vanguard! Mayle! Quella! Cover us!]

[It’s useless! Feydeau-san please stay behind us!]

[Why!? As long as you protect us…kuu?!]

Feydeau’s party had made it to the fourth floor after making Randall a sacrifice but were being forced into some unexpected hardships on their way back.

[This dungeon isn’t about only what is in front of us! Monsters are appearing from every direction!]

[But an overwhelming number are coming from the front!?]

[Nevertheless! We won’t be able to recover if no one guards the back!]

[Kuu…]

Quella felt like screaming. Randall had been told he would slow down their escape, but to what extent was he actually a burden when he had been the one defeating monsters and traps. (TL: Not 100% on this one. 逃げ遅れたと聞かされたランドが道中、どれだけ障害となる罠や魔物を倒していたかということを) She never would have thought that they would struggle so much on a floor that wasn’t a floor boss’s floor.

[Randall-san…]

She had noticed such a thing too late.

It was just now that Mayle keenly sensed something.

[Loig…your Hate Control is sloppy]

(TN: This is supposed to be a skill I think. This might not be accurate, but based on the way they describe Randall controlling it, I’d guess it’s something like bloodlust that Loig just aims at Randall because he hates him so much, and the bloodlust attracts monsters to Loig. I dunno for sure though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

[Aghh! Shut it! There’s too many of them! It’s useless doncha think!?]

Certainly just as Loig said, there was a problem with the number of them. But still, Mayle realized as she ran behind him, Randall had really managed Loig’s hate control skillfully.

[Kuu… to struggle like this is unexpected…]

[Dammit! This wouldn’t have happened if that little shit didn’t die with our luggage! My sword’s become so rusty it won’t cut!]

Loig’s excuse didn’t resonate with the other three, particularly the leader Feydeau. It wouldn’t have been possible to carry in all those supplies without Randall.

[Shit!]

They had thought that Randall was only a burden. They only saw him as an existence that was truly useless, an annoyance, someone who slowed their progress and who was another mouth they had to feed.

As far as Feydeau was concerned, Randall was not just his childhood friend. A prodigal child who was the talk of the town. Feydeau arbitrarily thought of him as a rival, even if his opponent didn’t see it as such. Having removed those thoughts from his mind, he made Randall carry the luggage so it was harder for him to participate in battles and earn experience. It was Feydeau who did his best to force all of the chores onto Randall so the party wouldn’t notice his excellence. Randall had so thoroughly adapted to his position that before he knew, Feydeau had forgotten about the circumstances entirely. It had all gone according to plan. In their early childhood, Feydeau had even sometimes asked Randall to teach him things. But now it had gotten to the point where Feydeau was touted as the next hero.

Even after becoming an S-ranked adventurer and being called the next hero, there were obvious differences that could not be made up for. This fact struck at Feydeau’s mind.

[Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!]

The other party members looked taken aback for a moment at the sudden change from Feydeau’s prior lack of emotion, but passed it off as a shout to motivate and refocused on their current situation.

[‘Tsk’… At any rate I think it will be better once we get to the third level and less monsters keep appearing! Quella! Don’t run out of recovery magic!]

[I understand!]

Loig moves forward, preparing to take the hits. The S-ranked party had been forced into an unexpected struggle. They aimed to return to the guild while avoiding the approaching monsters.

Translator’s Note:

This was definitely the part I have felt least confident while translating yet. A lot of the sentences were weird or had a number of different ways I felt they could be interpreted and still make sense in the context of the story. I did my best to put things in such a way that I thought fit the best. Again, I’m always open to feedback and/or critiques of my accuracy.

Going off topic, would you all be interested in a separate page for discussion over what I or any of you are reading/watching/playing right now? I’m always looking for new stuff to get myself into and with the quarantine it feels like I go through everything that much quicker.

Thanks and stay well,

tom

P.S. A couple people have pointed out that there are some illustrations drawn by the author’s wife and so finally I have decided to stop being lazy and link the first one here.

  1. Thanks for the chapter!
Seems like the party is getting their just desserts. Although Loig seems to be the only one not reflecting and somehow still trying to blame someone abandoned without accepting any responsibility for own actions. Even if do manage to get out of dungeon they’re suffering is just beginning. Since dumped everything on Randall that means he’s probably got all the food, water, extra clothes, tent, blankets, oil and whetstones, etc. Basically, they’re going to have to find and gather food and water for the trip back along with making their own meals without the only cook in the group. (After all, let’s say you catch a goose or chicken. Do you have any idea how to drain, dress, and prepare it for a meal?) Would be really funny if turns out that Randall has all their money as well. Can see the headlines now, S party sleeping outside in dirty clothes due to not having enough money for food, an inn, much less the entrance fee to pass the gates.

Not enough info on Hate Control to really determine if skill or why Randall was able to do something with it. Granted it sounds like an aggro skill that forces monsters to focus on user (possibly by really hating the user) and ignore others even if would normally target the others. However, the sentences about Randall controlling it makes it sound like Loig wasn’t doing everything himself even if everyone, including Randall, thought he was. Could be Loig directed unreasonable hate towards Randall, and Randall somehow using taming skill to deflect that hate onto monsters resulting in Loig becoming more efficient and better at drawing the monsters to only him and away from the others even if others did something that would’ve drawn more aggro than him.

  3. Hate Control – aggro management

In gaming it’s the use of abilities to redirect enemy attention (aggro) from squishy team members like damage dealers and healers to the tankers.

  4. You can find a comprehensive explanation of what “hate control” means here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_(video_games)

Basically Loig is the party’s tank, so he should be attracting the monsters’ attention with his skills and drawing them away from his squishier teammates. It sounds like Randall was basically acting as the party offtank and keeping things to a level Loig could handle, and without him the tank is swamped and the party doesn’t have a workable combat formation.

  5. By hate control, pretty sure they’re talking about aggro. Randall probably helped to keep the monsters aggroed on the tank, but now that they left him to the bulls, they realize they dun goofed

  6. Aggro in Japanese is instead referred to as Hate. So, Hate Control is probably referring to Aggro Management, basically the knowhow of how to handle aggro, which is a basic skill you need to learn for gaming. Basically, Loig isn’t that good as a tank and can’t grab and manage aggro that well, so Rei was acting as his crutches as a sub-tank.

  7. From context, it feels like hate control seems something like pulling aggro in a MMO. Which is like a tank getting the enemies to attack them while the rest of the party do damage or heal.

    1. I agree with everyone in the comments that Loig’s “Hate Control” is definitely pulling aggro to him. The part that gets me tripped up is actually HOW it works. A few lines after that TL note I’ve got this [だがロイグの雑なヘイト管理をいかにランドがうまくコントロールしていたかもまた] translated as [Randall had really managed Loig’s hate control skillfully]. Based on the way the sentence is structured in Japanese, it seems like the author was indicating that Loig’s hate control is the direct object of Randall’s control, meaning that Randall is somehow responsible for how well Loig’s skill works. It’s definitely mentioned that Randall played a role tanking as well, but in this case it feels more like what I explained in my TL note. Loig’s basically hates Randall to such an extent that it’s easy for him to direct it all at Randall while using the skill. Monsters then detect this hate and target the source of it aka Loig. Without Randall there though, Loig has no one or nothing to direct his hate at, and so the skill use is sloppy and crude and doesn’t really work properly.

That was more what I was uncertain about because I’ve never heard of a skill that works like that, but it makes sense in the context of the story and who the characters are I think.

      Thanks for the feedback!

      1. That’s easy, first I’ll explain how “Aggro” works normally in a game setting.

Aggro as it works in MMOs is supposed to be a “treat” level that the characters have, take it as a placement on the board of priorities of the enemy, if a priest uses a “heal” her “treat” level increases raising her 3 places in the priority making her at the top so all enemies focus on her, TANKS regularly need to use their specific Aggro abilities like “taunt” to raise their own “treat” level and lower the “treat” level of their friends, that is IN GAME MECHANICS at their base.

As far as I see, in this world, the Tank (shield of the country knight or whatever the title they gave him) is constantly releasing blood lust (you know, that intangible desire to kill things that supposedly people can project and feel) so according to his personality he’s what we would call a “Murder Hobo” on classic board RPG settings, constantly wanting to “kill”, the reason WHY he worked as a tank was because of this making him a priority (the author is combining both system, in-game mechanics with regular fantasy setting), but since it seems it’s a skill he can’t control willingly, when they were with Randall, the Tank kept focusing his blood lust on him because he hated him, now that he doesn’t have Randall to focus it, it’s perceived by every mob on the dungeon and they start swarming the party because of it…

It makes sense if you make the common in-game skills a natural occurrence of the world, it gives the tank an appropriate power for a tank with a logical explanation on a fantasy setting, by combining both systems he’s being clever and it’s great world building because now we know what to expect from classes and abilities.
